Bath garden club

Membership

While we are all garden lovers, we are not all practicing gardeners. Our skills range from casual beginner to more experienced to Master Gardener; and some of us simply admire the beauty created by the gardeners around us. Our activities encompass the interests and talents of everyone who would like to join us. And we work with many local organizations to create beautiful spaces throughout the community of Bath, Maine.

Learn from One Another

Our members share their knowledge to help each other solve problems in the garden. Some of us have gardened in Maine’s special climate for decades; the insights and tips of our experienced gardeners are happily shared with newcomers.

Learn More

Members have many options for continuing their gardening education with the Club’s Monthly Programs, Garden Visits, and Hands-on Workshops; the University of Maine Extension service; and through programs offered by affiliated groups such as Garden Club Federation of Maine (GCFM).

Special Projects

We maintain gardens at City (Library) Park and the Donnell House at Maine Maritime Museum, as well as three gardens in Woolwich and the garden at Bath's Senior Center. We also provide seasonal flower arrangements for the Maine Maritime Museum, Meals on Wheels, and Sagadahoc Preservation, and other groups.

Fund-Raising Events

Our Annual Plant Sale and Festival of Greens fundraisers offer home-grown and hand-made items for sale. Materials are drawn from members' gardens and resources to raise money that is returned to our community through scholarships, contributions, and conservation efforts.

Promote Garden Appreciation and Sustainable Practices

With the Garden Club Federation of Maine and the National Garden Club, Inc., we participate in and support projects across the state, the New England region and nationally.

Encourage Learning

We provide scholarships for students pursuing horticultural degrees, summer learning, and Master Gardener Certification. Bath Garden Club contributes to the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust, Merrymeeting Audubon Society, and the Friends of Merrymeeting Bay in support of their efforts to promote the growth and health of our gardens, woods, and pollinators.

We spend the late autumn collecting plant material and making all types of holiday decorations. Featured items include live wreaths & greens, centerpieces, ornaments, vintage objects gardening items, and specialty items.

Annual Plant Sale

Gardeners line up before 8 am to start shopping our Member-curated Plant Sale. Members offer a huge choice of prized perennials dug from their gardens including peonies, hostas irises, rhubarb, and herbs, as well as a variety of annual and vegetable seedlings, plus ground covers, shrubs and small trees. Browse the Garden Treasures table for garden-themed gifts, tools, and books.

Nearly all Members assist with our major fundraiser by digging, potting, identifying plants, labeling, and transporting plants; collecting gently used garden books and tools, and vintage items items for the Garden Treasures table; help with tent/table set up and break down; serve as cashiers; and provide help on sale day. This is our major fundraiser, which like the Festival of Greens, supports scholarships and other community projects.
